•N-GQDs (19.1%) has a higher quantum yield than GQDs (1.7%).•The fluorescence intensity of N-GQDs is stronger than that of GQDs, and the enhancement mechanism was analyzed.•The ultra-high Fe3+ detection selectivity and sensitivity of Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots were proved.
