The weight of culture: Societal individualism and flexibility explain large global variations in obesity

•Large variations in obesity rates exist even among equally developed countries.•This study tests whether two national cultural traits can explain these differences.•Individualism is associated with higher obesity rates in men but not in women.•Flexibility is consistently associated with lower obesity rates among both genders.•Results are robust under alternative specifications and imputation of missing cases.
