•V4AlC3 MAX phase was synthesized using the reactive sintering method.•Solvent-free aerobic oxidation of toluene to benzaldehyde by V4AlC3 was studied.•Effects of the catalyst dosage, air pressure, temperature, and time were evaluated.•The catalytic oxidation of toluene was explained using a radical-based mechanism.
