Recommended Resources for Biomarkers in Disease: Toxicology

It is extremely challenging to assess patients exposed to toxins. An accurate history is difficult to obtain; thus, tools and platforms for toxicological analysis are required. Biomarkers can be objectively measured and evaluated and are extremely useful in toxicology. They can be used to indicate susceptibility, exposure, and effect. This can facilitate risk assessment and treatment. Thus, biomarkers can prevent and reduce the harmful effects of select toxins. Some biomarkers can also provide great insight into the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of toxicity. The application of biomarkers is actively being investigated for a variety of toxins, and the understanding of this topic continues to be advanced.
