•A machine-learning-based routine blood panel is able to predict COVID-19 death.•Panel was tested in two hospitals in Brazil, with an average AUC of 0.91.•Higher concentrations of RDW, MCV, and CRP biomarkers may increase the risk of death.•Lower concentrations of lymphocytes and platelets may increase the risk of death.
