•We propose the novel planar and cylindrical metamaterials for energy dissipation and shock isolation.•Mechanical responses of unit cells are affected by geometric parameters and boundary conditions.•Increasing the number of layers and tailored geometric parameters are beneficial for energy dissipation and shock isolation.•Shock isolation performance improves due to the snap-through behaviors.
