Switched-Inductor Cuk and SEPIC Power Factor Correction Rectifiers

This paper suggests two novel high step-down-up power factor correction active SEPIC/Cuk rectifiers. The main superiority of the proposed SEPIC/Cuk basde rectifiers compared to previous converters, is the provision of the positive or negative buck-boost voltage gain ratio with the lowest number of semiconductor device count conducting simultaneously and the continuous input current. The converter also provides high step-down performance, and makes possible the positive or the negative output voltage levels with a low number of semiconductor power devices conducting together. High value of true power factor, sufficient ac side current quality and high value of efficiency are also accomplished. Laboratory results are illustrated for a 0.5 kW set-up prototype, acting from 220.0 Vrms ac source to ± 48.0 Vdc load. The laboratory results establish the potential for the high step-down and step-up operation from ac to dc power conversion with a peak efficiencies of 97.3% and 96.7%.
