•Exploiting survey data, we study how support for government changes with lockdown enforcement.•Altruistic punishers judge the government’s action as insufficient.•Increase in sanctions is associated with a flip in support for government.•After the hike in sanctions, altruistic punishers see COVID policies as too extreme.•The amount of desired punishment is associated with lower trust in government.
