•Pyrolysis and liquefaction (HTL) of biomass are compared to produce biobinders.•HTL provides a more stable product in high yield with relatively low oxygen content.•Biobinders performance depends on the biomass source and the technology applied.•Long-term performance and environmental impact studies for biobinders are missing.•Tables compiled from the literature are provided to identify suitable biobinders.
