•Fe0 nanoparticles were uniformly immobilized on COFs by a an in-situ growth method.•The Fe0/TpPa-1@DOPA has high Cr(VI) removal performance.•The high Cr(VI) removal performance could be realized in acidic, neutral and alkaline environments.
