Uniaxial stress identification of steel components based on one dimensional-CNN and ultrasonic method

•A model for the absolute stress identification of steel components is proposed based on 1-D CNN and ultrasonic technique.•The average error of the proposed model for the stress identification of unknown test samples is below 3.83%.•The proposed 1-D CNN model tends to achieve lower relative error as the steel components experience larger stress.
