U2R-pGAN: Unpaired underwater-image recovery with polarimetric generative adversarial network

•This article proposes an unsupervised polarimetric generative adversarial network for underwater-image recovery.•It breaks the dependence on strictly paired images and enhances recovery performance by informing polarization.•Experiments on different objects and imaging conditions verify the effectiveness and superiority of the method.
