See the forest not the trees! Ecosystem-based assessment of response, resilience, and scope for growth of global forests

•Ecosystem Fit, tNpp are higher in tropical than temperate and boreal forests.•Tropical forests allocate higher % of tNpp to bNpp than temperate or boreal forests.•Deciduous and evergreen traits do not explain tNpp of global forests.•Half of sampled global forests have low tNpp and are vulnerable to climate change.•Managers can use eFit to improve reforestation efforts in response to land use and climate change.
