Improving the Photostability of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) by Embedment in Silica

As a classical photosensitizer model, [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) possesses excellent photochemical properties and plays a critical role in photocatalysis. Improving the photostability of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) is still a challenge, as its ligands are easily lost upon light irradiation. It is thus of importance to understand the mechanisms of photo-instability and to explore counter measures. Herein, we demonstrate that loading [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+) in silica could greatly suppress its photodissociation of ligands, thus improving its photocatalytic activity. By integrating nano-stirbars with [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)-silica nanocomposites, the heterogeneous catalysis showed improved activity and recyclability. We believe that the preservation of the ligand sphere in embedded complexes would facilitate regioselectivity and enantioselectivity in conventional heterogeneous catalysis.
