•Ng-loaded microspheres with different terminal groups were prepared.•Release from microspheres and microspheres-SAIB depot was evaluated.•Hydroxyl-terminated microspheres -SAIB depot had an average daily release of approximately 1.06% (88 days total).•The study can improve the long-term controlled release potential of microspheres-SAIB depot.
