•We examine the consequences of executives’ discussion of their firms’ creativity.•Discussion of creativity in earnings calls negatively predicts stock returns.•However, discussion of creativity positively predicts firm financial performance.•Emotional tone of the discussion moderates market reactions to creative discussion.
