•A cost-effective partially damaged pipeline repair method is proposed and verified.•The temporary plugging material is composed of hydrogel and composite clay.•Adjusting the pipeline internal pressure achieved the shift from plugging to dredging.•The hydrogel material recovered at the filtration can be reused, reducing the cost.
