•Lactoferrin ameliorated cardiac aging and myocardial fibrosis in aged mice.•Lactoferrin inhibited TGF-β1-induced cardiac fibroblast activation and collagen synthesis.•NF-κB -related inflammation was inhibited by lactoferrin via AMPK activation.•Lactoferrin has potential use in alleviating age-related myocardial fibrosis.
