This review highlights recent progress in utilizing in situ liquid cell TEM characterization technique in investigating the real-time growth mechanisms of the formation of core–shell nanostructures, including one-pot synthesis, seed-mediated overgrowth, Kirkendall effect, galvanic replacement, corrosion and dealloying.
