Albedo on cropland: Field-scale effects of current agricultural practices in Northern Europe

•Agricultural practices affect the albedo of cropland and thus the climate.•Albedo was measured on 15 paired plots with different crops and management.•Phenology and tillage operations determined albedo differences at field level.•Climate benefits can be achieved by realistic changes in current practices.•Practices contribute differently to cooling mean, seasonal or peak temperatures.
