•Metabolic syndrome is common morbidity in Vietnam with a higher prevalence among women.•A low level of High-Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol could be an early detectable indicator of screening for metabolic syndrome.•Lifestyle interventions should be established to manage driving factors and nutritional issues among high-risk groups.
