•Chemical weathering intensity increased upwards in the ∼ 280 Ma Fengcheng Formation.•Detrital material of the FC Formation was supplied by the West Junggar, due to active normal faults.•Syn-rift sediments were deposited in an alkaline lake under arid climatic conditions.
