High-performance ZIF-8/biopolymer chitosan mixed-matrix pervaporation membrane for methanol/dimethyl carbonate separation

•CS/ZIF-8 mixed matrix membrane shows high MeOH/DMC separation selectivity at low concentration MeOH.•Incorporating ZIF-8 into CS matrix can significantly enhance MeOH permeance while increasing slightly membrane selectivity.•Membrane thickness significantly influences MeOH and DMC permeances and selectivities because of concentration polarization.•Sorption process dominates the separation in lower temperature range while diffusion process is observed to govern the separation in the higher temperature range.
