•Comparing predicted distribution of harbour porpoise using GAM & HBM-INLA with LGCP.•Predictions were similar but HBM-INLA captured finer-scale patterns in distribution.•Differences due to autocorrelation, clustering & discrete vs. continuous space.•Both suitable for large-scale analysis, but HBM-INLA has advantages for small scale.
