Fabrication of cajeput essential oil nanoemulsions by phase inversion temperature process

Cajeput (Melaleuca quinquenervia) essential oil has been broadly utilized in the beauty care products and pharmaceutical industries for a long time. The antibacterial and anti-insectival properties of this essential oil are exceptional. Numerous endeavors have been given to investigating new applications as well as tracking down a better approach to utilize this essential oil. Cajeput nanoemulsions can boost the effectiveness of cajeput essential oil at lower doses. Phase inversion temperature (PIT) is a well-known and viable method for making nanoemulsions. The goal of this work was to use the PIT approach to make nanoemulsions from cajeput essential oil. Several aspects impacting emulsion formation and characteristics were investigated, including oil phase composition, surfactant type and concentration, and mixing temperature. The PIT of the system was discovered to be around 85 degrees C. Tween 80 outperforms the other surfactants investigated in terms of producing nanoemulsions. Nanoemulsions with up to 10% oil phase can be formed with 10% Tween 80. The stability test showed that cajeput nanoemulsion could be stable for more than 120 days. Our findings may help to broaden the applications of cajeput essential oil. Copyright (C) 2022 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
