Experimental and numerical investigation of wall temperature in a heated pipe filled with beads

•The temperature of a pipe filled with beads and heated with air flowing through the granular bed is investigated.•A damping function is combined with the nakayama-kuwahara turbulence model to improve the accuracy of temperature predictions.•Suggestions to improve the pipe wall thermal uniformity are provided.
