•Realistic estimate of 14C generation and release processes for RBMK-1500 reactors.•Main circulation circuit and gaseous circuit make up major part of airborne release.•Estimated 14C releases agree well with the one evaluated from pine tree ring samples.•Results can be projected to the RBMK-1000 reactors rescaling to lower reactor power.
