•Entire Archean Anshan–Benxi greenstone belt (ABGB) underwent NE-SW compression (σ1).•Northeastern ABGB points to a rear-arc to back-arc basin zone with vast volcanics.•Southwestern ABGB points to a stable depositional back-arc basin with vast strata.•Arc- to back-arc-related magmatism in the ABGB erupted between ∼ 2.57 and 2.52 Ga.•ABGB underwent S/SW trending subduction with strong crustal growth and reworking.
