•The formation mechanism and evolution of WELs on different rail grades were investigated by field monitoring and experiments.•Head Hardened (HH) rail presents a susceptibility to form WELs than Standard Carbon (SC) rail.•Kinetics of WELs on two rail grades are influenced by interlamellar variation, austenite growth, and cementite dissolution.
