•Benzene, 1,2,4-trimethoxy-5-(2-methyl-1-propen-1-yl) ameliorates neurological deficits and Blood-brain barrier permeability after ICH.•Benzene, 1,2,4-trimethoxy-5-(2-methyl-1-propen-1-yl) reduces brain water, hematoma volume and inflammatory factors after ICH.•Benzene, 1,2,4-trimethoxy-5-(2-methyl-1-propen-1-yl) inhibits calcium influx and excitotoxicity induced by glutamate.•Benzene, 1,2,4-trimethoxy-5-(2-methyl-1-propen-1-yl) stabilizes the mitochondrial membrane potential and restores mitochondrial function.•Benzene, 1,2,4-trimethoxy-5-(2-methyl-1-propen-1-yl) attenuates apoptosis and oxidative stress.
