•The microstructure was refined after massive LSP impacts.•Compressive residual stress mainly reduces the nucleation rate of larger pits.•Pitting corrosion resistance cannot be improved after LSP with single laser passage.•The passive film was more protective with thicker inner layer after five impacts.
