•The mineralogy in the Caojiaba is similar to reduced tungsten skarns worldwide.•Wolframite grains yielded 206Pb/238U ages of 212.4 ± 1.0 Ma and 211.8 ± 1.1 Ma.•Reduced tungsten mineralization occurred during the late Triassic in the XZMP.
