•DRS measurements were optimized for direct and rapid screening of pesticide residues.•Pre-processing DRS data is highly recommended before PCA.•Use of PCs scores as inputs to ML models improves the classification accuracy and speed.•SVM was found to be 8 times quicker than the NNET and RF models.
