Short communication: Utilisation of n-alkanes to estimate feed intake in horses fed known amounts of a labelled concentrate supplement

•A relative simple methodology was evaluated to assess feed intake in stable horses.•n-Alkane compounds can be used to assess horses’ feed intake.•Beeswax can be used to provide a distinct n-alkane profile to concentrate feeds.•Provision of known amounts of labelled concentrate allows feed intake estimation.•This methodology also allows the assessment of roughages in horses’ diets.
