•Polyethylene fiber enhanced the flexural strength and reduced compressive strength of mortar.•Two surfaces functionalized CNCs have opposite impacts on the mechanical properties of mortar.•Coating CNC improved fiber-cement interaction.•Molecular dynamics simulation results are consistent with the mechanical experiment results.
