•The quartz filler with appropriate size can promote the HTD of HgCl2(g).•The presence of active Cl atoms is a crucial factor hindering the HTD of HgCl2(g).•Cl atoms and O can promote the generation of HgO with intermediates ClO, which is a vital transition product for Hg0 re-oxidation.•A rapid cooling process can avoid the hazard of Hg0(g) re-oxidation by chlorine species.
