•The effect of the type of halogen substituents in zinc phthalocyanines were studied.•The quantum chemical calculations of the vibrational spectra were carried out.•Structure of phthalocyanine films was dependent on the type of halogen substituents.•Chlorosubstituted zinc phthalocyanine films exhibited the maximal conductivity.
