摘要
Agroecosystems’ survival and productivity depend mainly on soil physical and chemical characteristics. One aspect that stresses plants is the soil contamination. Hence, phytoremediators, as plant species, do not only accumulate and/or degrade large amounts of various toxins but also develop strategies to tolerate and adapt to the noxious effects exerted by those contaminants. However, the main limiting factors are introducing heavy metals through the food chain and the negative effect of heavy metals and crude oil on the genetics of the used plants in the soil treatment. The applicability of the phytoremediators depends on their resistance to pathogens, pests, and excluding the contamination through the food chain. This chapter highlights soil pollution and its remediation for sustainable agricultural productivity. Furthermore, the promises and restrictions of using plant species for soil remediation are considered.
