Planctomycetes / Planctomycetia The class Planctomycetia was circumscribed on the basis of the phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences. This class accommodates Gram‐stain‐negative bacteria that possess a complex cellular architecture and divide by budding. The class contains four orders, that is, Planctomycetales, Pirellulales, Gemmatales , and Isosphaerales , which accommodate aerobic and facultatively anaerobic chemoorganotrophs. Members of the class Planctomycetia colonize a wide spectrum of aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The type order is Planctomycetales .
