Self-healable and redox active hydrogel obtained via incorporation of ferric ion for supercapacitor applications

•Novel self-healable and redox active PVA/phytic acid/Fe3+ (PPFe) hydrogel is prepared.•Fe3+ afford the gel crosslinking network coordination bonds and redox active centers.•PPFe gel exhibits superior mechanical properties and self-healing ability to PP gels.•The self-healable PPFe supercapacitor shows ultrahigh capacitance and energy density.
