Temporal-spatial evolution analysis of severe traffic violations using three functional forms of models considering the diurnal variation of meteorology

•Three counting models are used to build violation performance functions, and NB-2 is better suited.•DUI violations present temporal instability varying months and day of the week.•Violations frequently occur on pleasing weather days with clear visibility, slight breeze, and good air quality.•The worst-case scenarios for DUI violations are sunny holidays and Friday with lower temperatures.•More speeding violations occur on sunny holidays with improved visibility.
