The effect of widening longitudinal road markings on driving speed perception

•This research tries to verify if wider longitudinal markings affect driver perception.•In a field experiment road markings were painted wider than normal.•Video recordings were made with narrow and wide markings.•A survey analyzed in which video the participants perceived a higher speed.•Wide road markings could lead drivers to reduce their speed.
