•This study provides evidence for the efficacy of EVT in WUS and DUS.•Symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage and all-cause mortality were also evaluated the safety.•Strong and reliable methodological and statistical procedures were applied.•The meta-analysis confirmed the main findings of randomised controlled trials of EVT.
