•Deep learning and context-aware heuristics were used for Atrial Fibrillation detection.•DeepAware outperforms many state-of-the-art Atrial Fibrillation detection models.•DeepAware shows how P-wave detection and context-awareness help reduce false positives.•The generalizability of DeepAware has been tested on four unseen datasets.
