•Proposed and implemented a new paradigm, named high-density theta burst stimulation (hdTBS).•Assessed the aftereffects of hdTBS in rat motor cortex.•Developed a rat model to record MEP longitudinally.•hdTBS induced more prominent aftereffects than conventional intermittent TBS.•MEP recoding further confirmed the focality of the rat TMS coil to be 2 mm.
