•Northern Arabian-Nubian shield represents Cryogenian arc with cratonic basement.•First baddeleyite age of ophiolites indicates back-arc spreading as young as 687 Ma.•Periodic calc-alkaline plutons imply origin of hydrous melting from juvenile sources.•The shield accreted between 680 and 660 Ma during the closure of Mozambique ocean.
