Insight into anti-corrosion behavior of Centipeda minima leaves extract as high-efficiency and eco-friendly inhibitor

In this work, Centipeda minima leaves extract (CMLE) was prepared by facile hot-water immersion extraction and freeze-drying with Centipeda minima leaves as raw material. The potentiodynamic polarization curves (Tafel), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), quantum chemical (QC) calculations and molecular dynamics simulations (MDS) were performed to investigate the corrosion inhibition performance and the inhibition mechanism of CMLE on carbon steel in 1.0 mol/L HCl. The results show that the CMLE exhibits superior corrosion inhibition performance for carbon steel in HCl. The maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency of CMLE with a concentration of 500 mg/L was up to 96.2% at 318 K. The Tafel results indicate that CMLE belongs to mixed-type corrosion inhibitor and its adsorption on the surface of carbon steel conforms to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. Additionally, the corrosion inhibition mechanism of CMLE can also be confirmed by QC calculations and MDS.
