•Drowning is a leading cause of mortality during floods, with flooding prediced to increase in frequency and intensity.•Lifeguards represent a potential workforce to assist with flood mitigation and response.•We surveyed lifeguards from Australia and the UK, identifying flood response, some with involvement prior to flood training.•Lifeguards bring a willingness to respond in times of flood, as well as relevant water and emergency management skills.•Lifeguards called for greater recognition, early flood involvement, flood-specific training and equipment.
