•Tripterine was formulated into nanoscale phytosomes followed by selenium modification.•Selenized phytosomes attenuated the cytotoxicity of tripterine in macrophages.•Selenized phytosomal Tri could effectively inhibit NLRP3 inflammasome activation.•Se@Tri-TPs suppressed ATP-induced NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pyroptosis.
