Breeding goals for conservation and active Polish dairy cattle breeds derived with a bio-economic model

•Breeding goals should be delivered separately for conservation and active dairy cattle breeds.•The results of our study show that breeding the Polish Holstein allows a to achieve a higher economic profit than breeding the Polish Red.•Based on derived economical values for direct health traits, it is evident that higher milk yield leads to higher culling risk and lower productive life and lifetime production.•Bio-economic model SimHerd was suitable for the derivation of economic values for the functional traits of Polish dairy breeds.
